Why Montara pet parents choose at-home care
Montara is coastside living at its most literal: Montara State Beach is one of the few stretches on this shoreline where a dog can genuinely run free, and the dogs we see here have the coats to prove it — wind-blown, salted and full of sand.

Where Montara dogs actually spend their time
Knowing where a dog walks tells us what we will find in the coat before we open the van.
- Montara State Beach
- dog-friendly, with room to run off leash along the sand
- Montara light station
- marks the northern end of the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, whose bluff-top trails welcome leashed dogs
What that means for your dog’s coat
A free-running beach dog collects far more sand than a leashed one, and it lands everywhere — paws, belly, the feathering behind the legs. We rinse and brush before shampoo so the grit comes out instead of getting driven further in, and we dry all the way down to the skin, because damp coastal air will not do it for you.
Getting to your door in Montara
